Kung Fu Martial Arts Training For Real World Situations…
What do Bruce Lee and Robert Downey Jr. have in common? Apart from both being successful Hollywood actors they both trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu. Please read on and find out why….
Wing Chun is a Kung Fu Martial Arts Training style from China that wastes no time or effort on unnecessary and needless movements.
Wing Chun is a major Chinese martial art or system that is unparalleled in its suitability for today’s urban environment.
It is radically different in its general approach from most traditional martial arts.
It’s not reliant on strength, balletic poise, acrobatic movements, or a complexity of flamboyant tactics.
Instead of being technique oriented and requiring students to learn by rote an endless variety of movements (which often result in a ‘brain freeze’ in real life situations), Wing Chun is based on a clear understanding of fighting concepts and strategies, expressed via a minimal number of techniques which meet the basic criteria of simplicity, directness and efficiency. If you’re looking for simple, effective and powerful – keep reading – because this might be exactly what you want…
Although widely believed to have been founded and developed by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, and her female pupil, Yim Wing Chun, about 300 hundred years ago, Wing Chun has evolved over time via a process of “natural selection.”
Over the years, there’s been a continual discarding of superfluous, complex and ineffective techniques and movements. It’s the system that the legendary Bruce Lee used as the foundation of his own combat philosophy!
It’s become the most influential style of Kung Fu, allowing even traditional Karate and other Kung Fu practitioners to reappraise and enhance their own skills and techniques.
Successfully tested in real “no-holds barred” fights against numerous other styles of martial arts in Hong Kong in the 1950′s and early 1960′s, Wing Chun is considered to be one of the most, if not the most practical and efficient martial arts for use in today’s increasingly violent environment.
In simple terms…
Wing Chun is the “Science of Street Fighting”, designed solely for the purpose of surviving an attack by being a better attacker than one’s assailant. Hence it forms the perfect basis for the concept of Personal Protection.
Concepts instead of techniques
Wing Chun Kung Fu is based on self evident concepts as well as sound body mechanics. Concepts are used to highlight and illustrate ideas and therefore help in information retention.
Wing Chun differs form other styles of martial arts in that it has a relatively limited ‘arsenal’ of techniques. In fact it doesn’t use its movements as pre-set techniques, but adapts its tools in the most appropriate way dictated by a situation following universally applicable principles (centerline, economy of motion, etc.).
If compared to language learning Wing Chun Kung Fu training focuses more on the grammar, i.e. the structure of fighting instead of rote learned phrases (techniques) that are only usable in a fixed context (if that). It has hence been described as “logic applied to combat” and a form of “physical chess”.
‘Sifu’ Talib Fehlhaber
Sifu Talib is a veteran of the martial arts with over 30 years of experience. He has been very successful in training and mentoring people since 1993. He has trained housewives as well as members of the U.S. Army and many of his students have gone on to become successful martial arts instructors themselves.
Born in Germany in 1965, Talib was first introduced to the martial arts at the tender age of 6, when his father tired to channel the lively boy and proceeded to enrol him at a local Judo club. This was the beginning of a lasting love affair with the fighting arts that has endured until today.
He currently holds a 5th degree Black Belt level in Wing Chun Kung Fu. In 2007 he was recognised by the International Wing Tsun Masters Academy, Germany and officially awarded his “Sifu” title in recognition for his long standing engagement in teaching and promoting Wing Chun Kung Fu.
In a life time effort to keep his teaching practical and relevant he has devised his own method he calls “Dynamic Wing Chun Kung Fu”. As the name suggests it is broadly based on Wing Chun, but incorporates and integrates ideas of other fighting disciplines, especially when it comes to weapons.
Sifu Talib is the founder and Chief Master Instructor of the Rapid Defence Martial Arts Academy. He established the Academy in 2004, which has now become Norfolk’s premium full time martial arts training centre.
